Josephine County Sheriff terminates Flock Safety contract

The Josephine County Sheriff's Office terminated its contract with Flock Safety, an automated license plate reader company, effective immediately as of August 13, 2026. The department had deployed ten cameras under the contract to assist in locating stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and missing subjects associated with specific vehicles, as well as to support criminal investigations.

The termination followed mounting concerns about the technology. Equipment in the field experienced vandalism and theft in recent months. Public opposition centered on potential constitutional implications, particularly Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches. The sheriff's office acknowledged that residents of Josephine County expressed unwillingness to accept ALPR technology deployment. Similar contract cancellations have occurred across other U.S. jurisdictions citing comparable equipment damage and public concern.

Sheriff Dave Daniel stated that the department requested county legal counsel to send a contract termination notice to Flock. While some equipment remains installed, it has been deactivated.
