Chetek votes to deactivate Flock cameras, seek contract termination

On August 27, the Chetek City Council held a special meeting at which it voted to deactivate the city's Automated License Plate Reader cameras and authorized Police Chief Ron Ambrozaitis to seek early termination of the multi-year Flock Safety contract. Both cameras were taken out of service immediately following the vote, with Chief Ambrozaitis and the Public Works department officially bagging and tagging the units.
The decision followed months of national scrutiny and safety concerns raised regarding city hall personnel. The city also received an influx of public records requests after the cameras were installed in May. Chief Ambrozaitis requested the deactivation and contract termination. The city is now awaiting a response from Flock Safety regarding the possibility of canceling the agreement early.
